Apple’s Image Playground doesn’t suck anymore
New features allow natural language prompting and photo library integration, addressing previous quality criticisms

Apple announced a series of enhancements to its Image Playground artificial intelligence image generation tool during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 keynote on Monday. The update represents a strategic effort to improve the functionality and output quality of the application, which has previously faced scrutiny for generating imagery that lagged behind competitor offerings.

According to Apple Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto, the revised tool allows users to create images using natural language prompts and incorporate individuals directly from their personal photo libraries. During the presentation, Ikemoto demonstrated how users could generate custom imagery, such as designing a birthday invitation by inserting a friend’s photo and using text descriptions to add specific elements like candles or alter clothing.

The update also introduces greater flexibility regarding image dimensions, enabling users to tailor outputs for various applications. Capabilities now include generating landscape images suitable for small business websites or portrait formats for flyers. As the tool is integrated across the device, it can also be utilised for creating lock screens, iMessage backgrounds, and contact posters.

Privacy remains a central pillar of the announcement, with Apple emphasising that private cloud compute protocols ensure user photos are neither stored nor shared, even with the company itself. This distinction is highlighted in contrast to broader industry practices, where some competitors have been reported to utilise private user data for AI training purposes.

These improvements form part of a wider overhaul of Apple Intelligence announced at the conference, which also includes a significant repositioning of Siri as an AI-powered conversational companion following a two-year development delay. However, journalists have not yet had the opportunity to test the updated application, leaving independent verification of the claimed quality improvements pending.
