Apple may split iPhone 18 launch, delaying base model until 2027
Apple is reportedly preparing to focus its September event on premium iPhone models and a possible foldable device as component costs rise.
Apple may announce the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at its 9 September event, while delaying the cheaper standard iPhone 18 until spring 2027, according to a report from WIRED.
The reported plan would break with Apple’s usual practice of launching base and premium iPhone models together. The spring release could also include a rumoured iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air, although Apple has not confirmed the product line-up or timing.
A possible foldable iPhone is also expected to feature at the event. The device is rumoured to cost about US$2,000, making it one of the company’s most expensive products if launched at that price.
Rising memory and other component costs may be influencing Apple’s reported focus on premium devices. IDC analyst Nabila Popal said Apple could release three premium models in autumn, followed by mid-range and budget devices in spring, helping spread revenue between its traditionally stronger fourth quarter and weaker spring period.
Apple has also introduced measures that could make higher prices easier for customers to absorb. In July, it launched an iPhone leasing programme alongside financing and trade-in options.
The launch reports are based on leaks, rumours and analyst expectations. Apple has not confirmed the schedule, a foldable device or any pricing, while smartphone manufacturing costs continue to rise and demand for refurbished devices grows as new-phone sales slow.
