Apple integrates Siri AI into iPhone camera with iOS 27 update
The Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled significant artificial intelligence enhancements for the iPhone at its Worldwide Developers Conference, embedding Siri directly into the camera app and introducing new generative editing capabilities for the Photos app.

Apple announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino that iOS 27 will integrate Siri AI directly into the iPhone camera application. The update removes the requirement for users to press the Camera Control button to access Visual Intelligence, a feature previously designed to provide contextual assistance similar to Google Lens. Instead, the functionality is now visibly embedded within the camera interface, allowing users to identify plants or add dates from posters to their calendars with greater ease.
The operating system update also introduces several generative artificial intelligence tools to the Photos app. An enhanced Clean Up function utilises updated AI foundation models to more realistically fill in images after unwanted objects are removed. Additionally, a new Extend feature employs generative AI to create imagery that fills gaps when users crop photos too closely to the edge, providing additional breathing room in compositions.
Another new capability, Spatial Reframing, allows users to alter a photo’s perspective by dragging on the image. The system uses generative AI to fill in the resulting gaps created by the shift in viewpoint. These features align with similar functionalities established by competitors such as Google Pixel, which has offered comparable tools like Magic Eraser and generative fill in recent years.
Beyond the camera and photo applications, Apple is repositioning Siri as an AI companion through a major interface overhaul. The assistant’s interface now lives within the Dynamic Island, replacing previous screen glow animations. Users can swipe down from the Dynamic Island to search or type queries, or utilise the side button for more in-depth answers. The assistant is now capable of executing complex tasks, including creating plans and facilitating brainstorming sessions.
Apple has also integrated Google’s Gemini model into iOS 27 systemwide dictation, aiming to provide a unified voice-to-text experience across applications. Furthermore, Apple Intelligence has been integrated into the Shortcuts app, enabling users to create automation workflows through natural language prompts. iOS 27 is scheduled for release in autumn 2026.
