Apple extends iOS 27 support to iPhone 11, but AI features remain exclusive to newer models
The tech giant confirms no iPhones are being dropped from the iOS 27 rollout, yet artificial intelligence capabilities are restricted to devices released in 2023 and later.

Apple has confirmed that iOS 27 will maintain compatibility with all iPhone models that supported iOS 26, extending support to devices as old as the iPhone 11. The update prioritises performance efficiency, with claims that apps will open up to 30 per cent faster, new photos will load 70 per cent quicker, and AirDrop transfers will be 80 per cent faster. While the operating system introduces Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features, these capabilities are restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer models.
The decision to retain support for the seven-year-old iPhone 11 ensures that no iPhones are being dropped from the current software cycle. This broad compatibility contrasts sharply with the approach taken for wearable devices. watchOS 27 imposes stricter hardware limitations, supporting only Apple Watch Series 10 and newer, Ultra 2 and newer, and SE 3 models. This exclusion leaves behind three Apple Watch Series models, one Apple Watch SE model, and one Apple Watch Ultra model that were previously able to run watchOS 26.
Efficiency improvements appear to be a central theme of the iOS 27 release, potentially unlocked by a newly optimised iOS CPU scheduler. These enhancements aim to improve multitasking and overall system responsiveness without requiring the latest silicon. However, the specific technical changes that made extending the lifespan of the iPhone 11 possible remain unclear. The focus on software polish suggests that Apple is leveraging algorithmic improvements rather than relying solely on hardware upgrades to deliver speed gains.
Despite the broad iPhone support, the integration of artificial intelligence remains a premium feature. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features require the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or newer models to function. Furthermore, Siri AI features require pairing with an Apple Intelligence-enabled device and remain unavailable in the European Union on iOS and iPadOS devices due to regulatory considerations. This creates a distinct divide between general performance improvements and advanced AI capabilities within the same operating system release.
The rollout timeline indicates that watchOS 27 is scheduled for release in autumn 2026, introducing a dedicated app for managing conversations and a redesigned dynamic app grid. The interface changes include a new gesture for selecting widgets and highlights Siri-supported actions such as playing music or setting fitness goals. While the iPhone ecosystem benefits from extended support and speed boosts, the wearable sector sees a more selective approach to hardware compatibility, reflecting differing technological requirements for AI integration.
