Apple explores photo authentication in iOS 27 beta
Signals found in the latest operating system update suggest a new tool to combat generative AI misinformation, though its inclusion in the autumn release remains unconfirmed.

Apple is reportedly developing a photo authentication feature, tentatively identified as 'Reference Image', for the upcoming iOS 27. The tool aims to verify whether a photograph was captured by an iPhone camera by utilising sensor information and metadata, processed via Apple's Private Cloud Compute service. This development follows an analysis of the latest operating system beta by 9to5Mac, which identified code signals indicating work on the feature.
The verification process involves sending selected sensor data and metadata for an image to Private Cloud Compute for confirmation. To activate the authentication option, users would need to enable a new 'Reference mode' within their iPhone's camera settings. This mechanism is designed to establish content provenance in response to the rising prevalence of generative AI and concerns regarding the authenticity of digital media.
The proposed tool serves as a counterpart to existing digital watermarking methods currently being expanded by industry leaders. Apple has already integrated provenance tools into its generative AI capabilities, such as Image Playground, while competitors like Google are continuing to broaden their SynthID AI watermarking programs. Reference Image represents a distinct approach by focusing on hardware-level verification rather than embedding watermarks into generated content.
This development coincides with broader updates expected in iOS 27, which is anticipated to launch in the autumn and feature new artificial intelligence capabilities for Siri. The push for authentication tools reflects a growing industry focus on distinguishing between authentic photography and AI-generated imagery as these technologies become more sophisticated.
However, the feature remains in a beta testing phase, and its inclusion in the final public release is not guaranteed. Signals found in the beta code suggest the feature is still under development, and it may be excluded from the autumn rollout.
