Apple, Google add support for Thread 1.4
Streaming devices receive protocol update aimed at standardising credential sharing across Matter ecosystems

Apple and Google have initiated the rollout of Thread 1.4 support to their respective smart home streaming devices, marking a significant step toward consolidating fragmented wireless networks. The update is currently available on Apple TV running the tvOS 27 developer beta and on the Google TV Streamer via a software release. This development lays the groundwork for these devices, which function as Thread Border Routers, to implement credential sharing, allowing them to join existing Thread networks more efficiently rather than operating in isolation.

The introduction of the Thread 1.4 specification in 2024 was designed to address interoperability issues that plagued earlier iterations of the protocol. Previously, the industry attempted to have Border Routers operate seamlessly in the background, a strategy that failed to deliver the desired level of cross-ecosystem compatibility. The new standard introduces a uniform method for sharing credentials, effectively simplifying the process of connecting devices to a network in a manner similar to sharing a Wi-Fi password.

Despite the software updates, full functionality for credential sharing is not yet active in the current developer builds. DNS discovery tools confirm that Apple TV is running Thread 1.4, yet the iOS and tvOS 27 developer betas lack the interface options to share credentials. Similarly, while the Google TV Streamer now offers a QR code option to join a Thread network, initial testing indicates the feature may not function correctly for all users.

The rollout highlights a disparity in update timelines across major hardware lines. HomePod Software 27 and Google Nest Hubs have not yet received the Thread 1.4 update. Apple’s smart speakers are currently excluded as there is no developer beta for HomePod Software 27, while predictions suggest the Google Home Speaker will receive the update later this month. Notably, Thread 1.4 support previously appeared in a tvOS 26 beta but was removed prior to the final release.

This move aligns with broader industry efforts to unify Matter ecosystems. Samsung added credential sharing support to its SmartThings hubs in October of the previous year, and Ikea’s Dirigera hub already operates on Thread 1.4. Amazon has committed to updating its smart speakers to the latest specification this year. Once these major platforms converge, the smart home market may see a significant reduction in network fragmentation, unifying disparate devices into a single, cohesive mesh.
