Anthropic overtakes OpenAI in valuation surge to near $1 trillion
With annual revenue hitting $47 billion and a new $65 billion capital raise, Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI’s market standing, while both giants eye public listings.
Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI to become the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence startup, with its market valuation approaching the $1 trillion mark. This shift follows a substantial $65 billion Series H funding round, a deal that effectively triples the company’s estimated worth from February, when it was valued at approximately $380 billion. The transaction was led by major investors including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, alongside a previously agreed $5 billion contribution from Amazon.
The valuation spike is underpinned by a dramatic expansion in the company’s financial performance. Anthropic reported that its annual revenue has surged to $47 billion, a significant increase from the roughly $10 billion recorded last year. This growth has been driven by the widespread adoption of its Claude AI assistant and the Claude Code service, which is heavily utilised by software developers. Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao noted that demand for Claude products continues to grow rapidly on a global scale.
Product development remains a key pillar of the company’s momentum. Anthropic recently introduced new artificial intelligence models, including Claude Opus 4.8 and the closed-system Claude Mythos Preview. The latter is designed to offer enhanced cybersecurity capabilities for corporate clients, addressing specific enterprise needs as the technology matures. These releases coincide with intensifying competition in the broader AI market, where major players are racing to establish dominance.
The move places Anthropic ahead of its primary rival, OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March following a record $122 billion funding round. The dynamic between the two firms highlights the rapid consolidation of value in the sector. According to reports from CNBC, OpenAI is considering an initial public offering and may file for the listing within the coming weeks. Anthropic is also weighing a public stock offering, though specific timing for such a move has not yet been disclosed.
The rapid ascent of Anthropic occurs against a backdrop of shifting global sentiment regarding the technology. Earlier reporting by Qazinform News Agency highlighted that Kazakhstan ranked among the countries least concerned about job losses caused by artificial intelligence, according to a global survey by the Gallup International Association. As Anthropic and OpenAI prepare for potential public markets, the industry continues to navigate the intersection of explosive financial growth and societal impact.
