Anthropic expands Claude for Legal with new automation tools and third-party integrations
New capabilities integrate with DocuSign, Box, and Thomson Reuters Westlaw, arriving as rivals Harvey and Legora secure major funding rounds.

Anthropic has announced a significant expansion of its Claude for Legal suite, introducing new chatbot features, plugins, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectors designed to automate clerical functions for law firms. These updates target specific areas of law including commercial, privacy, corporate, employment, product, and AI governance, aiming to streamline tasks such as document search, review, drafting, and deposition preparation. The new tools are available to all paying Claude customers, building upon the initial launch of legal-focused features earlier this year.
A key component of this rollout is the integration with existing software ecosystems widely used by legal practitioners. The new MCP connectors allow Claude to interact directly with third-party systems, including document management platforms like DocuSign and Box, as well as legal research sites such as Thomson Reuters Westlaw. By connecting these specific data sources and applications to the AI model, Anthropic aims to reduce the manual friction traditionally associated with complex legal processes.
This strategic move comes amidst a period of heightened competition within the legal AI sector. The announcement follows substantial funding rounds secured by rival startups Harvey and Legora earlier in 2026. Harvey raised $200 million at a valuation of $11 billion in March, while Legora recently secured a $600 million series D round and launched a high-profile advertising campaign featuring actor Jude Law. Both competitors offer automated solutions designed to simplify byzantine legal workflows that have historically required entire teams of humans.
Anthropic's spokesperson noted that the legal sector is facing mounting pressure to adopt AI, with firms and in-house teams that move quickly pulling ahead fast. The company describes the legal industry as one of its most significant and fastest-growing verticals for knowledge work. However, the push for automation occurs against a backdrop of regulatory scrutiny and documented failures where AI-generated content has caused issues in court, ranging from error-ridden documents to judges using the technology to draft rulings.
Despite the competitive landscape and the risks associated with generative AI in the courtroom, Anthropic emphasises the utility of its new plugins in handling routine knowledge work. The company argues that as AI-generated lawsuits and arguments continue to overwhelm courts, efficient automation becomes increasingly vital for maintaining speed and accuracy. The new features represent a deeper push into the legal sector, leveraging the company's existing infrastructure to support the specific demands of modern law firms.
