Anthropic’s Dario Amodei has just one direct report
AI firm’s leadership model contrasts with industry norms as co-founder handles executive operations

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has disclosed a highly unusual organisational structure, revealing in a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang that he has only one direct report: his chief of staff. The arrangement delegates the management of the executive team and day-to-day operations to co-founder and president Daniela Amodei, who is Dario Amodei’s sister.

Amodei stated that this setup allows him to focus almost entirely on strategy, culture, and research direction. He also noted that the structure frees him to write essays on the future of civilization, including those with footnotes. He described the arrangement as "incredibly freeing," noting that managing large teams typically consumes significant time that could otherwise be directed toward higher-level strategic priorities.

The reported structure stands in contrast to standard practices within the artificial intelligence sector. OpenAI’s Sam Altman reportedly has around half a dozen direct reports, which is considered more typical for leaders of comparable scale. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang is noted as an extreme outlier in the other direction, with many dozens of direct reports.

Anthropic was founded little more than five years ago and is currently valued by private market investors at roughly the trillion-dollar mark. The company is described as one of the world’s fastest-growing AI firms, a trajectory that has drawn attention to its internal governance and leadership dynamics.

While the structure is described as highly unusual, it represents a deliberate choice by Amodei to separate strategic oversight from operational management. The disclosure comes as the broader industry continues to grapple with the challenges of scaling leadership teams in rapidly expanding technology sectors.

The valuation figures for Anthropic are based on private market estimates and should be treated as approximate. Similarly, the data regarding the number of direct reports for Altman and Huang is reported as such and may not be officially confirmed by their respective companies.
