Jon Anik disagrees with Dana White's GOAT stakes at UFC Freedom 250
Lead announcer cites title defence records to dispute Pereira’s legacy standing

UFC lead announcer Jon Anik has publicly contested UFC CEO Dana White’s assertion that Alex Pereira could surpass Jon Jones on his personal 'Greatest of All Time' (GOAT) list if he defeats Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250. Anik argued that Pereira’s legacy is not yet comparable to Jones, Georges St-Pierre, or Demetrious Johnson, citing title defences as the primary metric for greatness.

Anik identified title defences as his primary metric for measuring greatness in mixed martial arts. The announcer highlighted that Pereira has recorded only three title defences, contrasting this with Jones’ 16, Georges St-Pierre’s 13, and Demetrious Johnson’s 12. Anik noted that Pereira did not defend the middleweight title after winning it, implying this limits his claim to the top tier of all-time greatness.

During a pre-fight news conference, Anik suggested that Daniel Cormier’s status as a simultaneous double-champion is undervalued in GOAT conversations. He referenced his broadcast partner, noting that Cormier defended belts in two divisions, yet is not necessarily mentioned in these elite comparisons. Anik stated that greatness should be judged on championship title defences, suggesting that if banners were hung for every defence, Jones’ record would be visually dominant.

While expressing doubt about Pereira’s GOAT status relative to the sport’s historical elite, Anik acknowledged the historic nature of Pereira’s pursuit to become the first man to hold titles in three UFC divisions. He described this as chasing rarefied air that no one has breathed before, indicating that while the feat is significant, the work to catch up to the sport’s all-time greats is not yet complete.

The upcoming bout at UFC Freedom 250 features Pereira challenging Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title. Pereira currently holds a professional MMA record of 13-3, with a 10-2 record in the UFC. The concept of the GOAT remains a frequent subject of debate within the UFC community, often involving comparisons across different weight classes and eras, with Jones widely regarded as one of the most decorated fighters in history.
