With trade deadline looming, Detmers delivers scoreless start in Angels loss
Detroit Tigers edge Los Angeles Angels 2-1 in Anaheim

The Los Angeles Angels endured their 60th defeat of the season on Friday night, falling 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers in Anaheim. The loss deepens the club’s position at the bottom of the American League West and widens the gap in Wild Card contention, raising urgent questions about the organisation’s strategy as the Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches on 3 August.

Starter Reid Detmers provided a strong performance, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing just four hits while striking out seven batters. He did not issue a walk and threw 86 pitches before being removed from the contest. Manager Kurt Suzuki indicated the decision was based on Detmers’ effectiveness following the All-Star break, noting that the pitcher had struggled in previous starts. Detmers, who expressed a desire to help the team reach the postseason despite the looming deadline, remains a primary trade candidate.

The Angels held a 1-0 lead, secured by a first-inning RBI ground out from Josh Lowe, until the ninth inning. Closer Kirby Yates entered the game with two outs but struggled with command, citing an inability to retire the leadoff batter and poor pitch location. After a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, Yates surrendered a three-run home run to Hao-Yu Lee, who cleared the bases with a drive into right-center field.

Yates, who has faced challenges in the closer role throughout the season, admitted post-game that he did not throw the ball well and missed critical pitches. Samy Natera Jr. replaced Yates in the ninth inning, but the damage was done. The Angels received boos from fans at the Big A following the defeat, reflecting growing frustration with the team’s performance.

The loss intensifies speculation regarding Detmers’ trade value. External commentary from Underdog MLB has suggested that the Angels could demand a package greater than what the Tigers received for Tarik Skubal, highlighting Detmers’ status as one of baseball’s most attractive starting pitcher trade candidates. With new general management in place for the remainder of the season, the Angels face difficult decisions as they evaluate whether to sell at the deadline.
