Commanders' pre-training camp 53-man roster projection
Team media outlet outlines key positional battles and roster decisions

Washington Commanders media outlet Commanders Wire has published a preliminary projection of the team’s 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 training camp. With rookies set to report to Ashburn, Virginia, in less than a week and veterans following shortly after, the analysis focuses on unresolved positional battles and recent personnel moves. Practice is scheduled to begin on July 29, with the league-wide deadline to trim rosters from 90 to 53 players falling on August 30.

The projection suggests the Commanders will carry three quarterbacks, prioritising rookie Kaliakmanis over Sam Hartman. Sources indicate the team was highly rated on Kaliakmanis during the pre-draft process, describing the selection as a "David Blough pick." The decision to retain three signal-callers stems from concerns regarding the health of current starter Daniels, prompting a cautious approach to the position heading into the preseason.

Significant attention is directed toward the wide receiver group, where the status of Brandon Aiyuk remains uncertain. Although Aiyuk has expressed a desire to join Washington upon his release from the San Francisco 49ers, the Commanders appear to have soured on the prospect due to his social media activity. Meanwhile, the team is evaluating whether to sign Stefon Diggs or proceed with its existing group. The projection favours keeping promising former draft picks McCaffrey and Lane, both of whom contribute on special teams, while Van Jefferson is expected to miss the cut.

Defensive additions and internal competitions also feature prominently in the roster outlook. The recent signing of cornerback Rasul Douglas is viewed as a move to shore up a previously questionable area, with the team appearing satisfied with its secondary depth. On the edge, rookie Joshua Josephs is identified as a key player to watch, while Javontae Jean-Baptiste is projected to be excluded. The tight end group sees Okonkwo replacing Zach Ertz, with the projection noting that Sinnott will be utilised more frequently in David Blough’s offensive scheme.

Special teams and kicking duties present another area of contention, with undrafted rookie Drew Stevens projected to beat out Jake Moody for the starting kicker position. The running back room is expected to feature four players, including Croskey-Merritt, White, and Allen, reflecting a lack of a clear standout lead back. With the 90-man roster currently set, the Commanders will continue to refine their selection throughout the preseason, aiming to finalise their squad before the August 30 deadline.
