Angel Reese rewrites WNBA history with dual rebounding records
The Atlanta Dream star broke a 23-year single-game benchmark and surpassed the league’s season total in a single performance, cementing her status as the league’s premier rebounder.
Angel Reese established new benchmarks for the Women’s National Basketball Association on Monday, recording 26 rebounds in the Atlanta Dream’s 78–71 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. The performance was historic in scope, as Reese simultaneously broke the single-game record and surpassed the league’s all-time season total within the same contest.
The 26-rebound haul eclipsed the previous single-game mark of 24, a record held by Chamique Holdsclaw since May 23, 2003, when she played for the Washington Mystics. In the same game, Reese accumulated her 458th rebound of the season, a figure that now stands seven higher than the 2024 season record set by A’ja Wilson.
Reese’s consistency has been a defining feature of the Dream’s campaign. She secured her 27th double-double of the season with a basket with 13.9 seconds remaining, moving her within one of the single-season record set by Alyssa Thomas in 2023. The milestone followed a career-high 31-point performance in Atlanta’s win at Phoenix on Saturday, underscoring a productive stretch for the team.
The victory completed a perfect 4–0 West Coast trip for the Dream, improving their record to 25–13. Atlanta coach Karl Smesko noted the player’s upward trajectory, stating that Reese has been remarkable on the road trip and that her improvement is visible each month.
As a three-time All-Star, Reese has led the league in rebounding in her first two seasons and is on track to repeat the feat in 2026, currently averaging 12.4 per game. Her career total now stands at 1,281 rebounds in 101 games, a figure that places her well behind the all-time leader, recently retired Tina Charles, who accumulated 4,262 rebounds over 14 seasons.
Reese has credited Charles with providing crucial advice on playing around the basket, a relationship that highlights the continuity of rebounding excellence in the league. With her previous single-game career high of 22 rebounds set during her rookie season in 2024, Monday’s performance represents a significant leap in her statistical profile.
