Analysis Identifies Ten Power Conference Coaches Facing Scrutiny Ahead of 2026 Season
A recent assessment highlights significant institutional pressure on ten head coaches due to declining performance metrics and failure to meet playoff benchmarks.

An analysis has identified ten head coaches across the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12 conferences who are facing significant pressure ahead of the 2026 college football season. The assessment, which focuses on institutional stability and performance metrics, cites recent poor win-loss records, failure to reach the College Football Playoff, and declining team performance as primary factors contributing to the pressure on these figures.
The coaches under scrutiny include Mike Leby of Mississippi State, Dabo Swinney of Clemson, Bill Belichick of North Carolina, Lincoln Riley of USC, Shane Beamer of South Carolina, Dave O’Brien of Boston College, Mike Locksley of Maryland, Dave Aranda of Baylor, Luke Fickell of Wisconsin, and Mike Norvell of Florida State.
In the SEC, Mississippi State’s Mike Leby is facing scrutiny after his team lost eight of its last nine games to end the previous year. While Ole Miss reached the College Football Playoff semifinals, Mississippi State’s performance has drawn comparisons to previous eras, with expectations for an exciting offense that can compete with larger programs. Similarly, South Carolina’s Shane Beamer is under pressure after a 4-8 season and a 1-7 record in conference play, following a 9-win season the previous year.
In the ACC, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is considered to be on a hot seat despite winning two national titles in the late 2010s. The Tigers finished 7-6 last season, and the analysis notes the need for Swinney to prove his ability to win in the current NIL and transfer portal era. North Carolina’s Bill Belichick, arriving with high expectations, is also facing pressure after a 4-8 season, with reports indicating that a failure to make a bowl game could lead to a separation between the coach and the university.
The Big Ten and Big 12 also feature coaches under intense scrutiny. USC’s Lincoln Riley, on a 10-year, $110 million contract, has yet to make the College Football Playoff in five seasons. The analysis suggests that anything less than a playoff berth will be viewed as a disappointment. In the Big Ten, Maryland’s Mike Locksley and Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell are facing criticism after back-to-back 4-8 seasons and a 17-21 record over four years, respectively.
Baylor’s Dave Aranda and Florida State’s Mike Norvell are also highlighted. Aranda’s tenure has been inconsistent, with four of his five seasons ending in losing records. Norvell’s time at Florida State has seen the Seminoles post a 7-17 record over the last two seasons, with a buyout of over $50 million cited as the primary reason he has not yet been dismissed.
The assessment underscores the high stakes in college football governance, where recent performance trends directly impact job security. The pressure on these ten figures reflects a broader trend of declining patience for underperformance in the nation’s top conferences.
