Amy Hunt says Sydney Sweeney betting advert risks creating a barrier for girls in sport
The British sprinter says sports role models should focus on women’s athletic ability rather than appearance, while acknowledging a wider response celebrating women’s sport.

British sprinter Amy Hunt has criticised a Novig sports betting advert featuring actor Sydney Sweeney, warning that its imagery could become a barrier to young girls taking part in sport.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Hunt said sports role models should show “what your body can do” rather than focus on how it looks. She said the issue was particularly important given that, according to figures she cited, 64 per cent of girls leave exercise and sport before reaching 16.
The advert for the American gambling company features Sweeney wearing little or no clothing while covered by sports equipment. Hunt’s criticism was directed at the advert’s imagery and intention, rather than at Sweeney personally.
Hunt said elite sport could involve visible physical and emotional strain, and that young people should feel able to participate without worrying about their appearance or clothing. She argued that sport should be presented as an opportunity for empowerment, whether at professional level or through recreational activity.
The response has also produced a broader celebration of women’s sport, Hunt said, with positive compilations from female competitors shifting attention beyond the advert itself. Yahoo Sports reported that Hunt had previously addressed Sweeney after finishing fourth in the 200m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships.
Hunt won four gold medals at the European Championships the previous month, according to the report.
