Amazon’s Echo Hub gets a customizable new look and Ring’s AI features
Free software update brings drag-and-drop home screen controls and natural language video search to the 2024 smart display

Amazon has released a free software update for its Echo Hub smart display, introducing a redesigned home screen that allows users to resize and rearrange interface sections via drag-and-drop functionality. The update also integrates Ring AI capabilities, specifically natural language video search and Alexa Plus summaries of detected camera events.

The Echo Hub, originally launched in 2024, previously added support for Alexa Plus AI services. This new update refines the device’s interface, offering a layout that Amazon describes as cleaner and more capable of displaying smart home information and controls than the initial version.

Users can now organise their dashboard by room or function, such as “Bedroom,” “Downstairs,” or “Climate.” The interface allows for the creation of custom device groups, which are accessible via voice control and the companion app. Existing groups can be edited by long-pressing the bottom bar, enabling users to add or remove devices and reorder them for simultaneous control.

Granular device settings are now accessible by tapping the three-dot menu on connected devices. For lighting, this includes precise dimming from 0 to 100 per cent and colour adjustment using a colour wheel on compatible bulbs. The update also provides quick access to common Routines directly from the home screen’s automations section.

The integration of Ring AI features allows users to search through smart home camera footage using natural language. Additionally, the update includes Alexa Plus summaries of detected camera events, enhancing the device’s utility for security monitoring. The specific rollout timeline for this update across all Echo Hub devices has not been specified.
