Amazon expands Kindle 'Story So Far' feature to iOS and hardware devices
The new tool, an extension of the existing Kindle Recap function, aims to help readers resume abandoned titles by providing character and plot point summaries.

Amazon has commenced the rollout of its 'Story So Far' feature to Kindle hardware devices and the iOS Kindle app, offering summaries of characters and plot points to assist readers returning to books after a break. The feature, an extension of the existing Kindle Recap tool, is currently available to US customers for thousands of English titles. It functions as a literary equivalent to the "Previously on..." segments found in weekly television series, designed to help users who have lost track of the narrative or taken prolonged breaks from a book.
The update requires users to refresh their devices to access the functionality. Once updated, readers can determine if a summary is available for a specific title by pressing and holding the book to select the 'Read Recap' button, or by tapping the three-dot menu while a book is open. Amazon states that the tool covers both purchased and borrowed books, though availability varies by title and is not guaranteed for all books compatible with the broader Recap feature.
Support for 'Story So Far' is distinct from the general Recap feature, meaning a book supporting one does not necessarily support the other. Additionally, not every Kindle hardware model is supported, with older devices potentially excluded from the rollout. Users are advised that some recaps may contain spoilers, and the system includes warnings to alert readers when plot details are revealed.
The feature was originally announced by Amazon in September of the previous year. It aims to encourage readers to revisit abandoned titles and maintain reading goals by reducing the friction of re-engaging with complex narratives. Despite the utility for US-based iOS and hardware users, the Android app is not currently included in this release, with no immediate timeline provided for its availability on that platform.
While the exact number of supported Kindle models and the specific count of eligible English titles remain unspecified, the rollout marks a significant expansion of Amazon's reading assistance tools. The feature addresses a common challenge for readers who find it difficult to re-enter a story after a long hiatus, providing context to help them pick up where they left off without needing to re-read previous chapters.
