Amazon cancels Stargate series reboot citing limited audience appeal
The streaming giant’s planned revival of the sci-fi franchise, led by Martin Gero, will not proceed as executives deem it too niche for broad viewership.

Amazon has cancelled its planned reboot of the Stargate television series, a project that was in development for two years following the company’s acquisition of MGM in 2022. The decision, confirmed by executive producer Joseph Mallozzi on social media, marks the end of a series that was originally announced in November last year. Mallozzi stated that the original vision for the show is no more, noting that the opportunity to introduce new viewers to the world or reintroduce familiar characters has been lost.
The cancellation stems from internal concerns that the series would lack broad audience appeal and cater primarily to hardcore fans of the franchise. Martin Gero, who previously worked on Stargate: Atlantis, helmed the project. According to Mallozzi, Gero spent two years crafting a narrative designed to serve as a fresh entry point for new viewers while respecting the existing canon. However, Amazon executives ultimately determined that the concept did not have the mass-market potential required to justify production.
The loss of the Stargate series leaves Amazon without a major hit in the science fiction genre. The company previously held a successful property with The Expanse, which concluded in 2022. The Stargate franchise, which originated with a 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, has since expanded to include the long-running Stargate SG-1 series, four other television shows, and two direct-to-video movies. The core premise of the universe revolves around ancient alien devices that function as galaxy-spanning wormholes.
Amazon began looking to develop projects within the Stargate universe shortly after acquiring the intellectual property through its purchase of MGM in 2022. While specific plot details or timeline placements for the cancelled series were never publicly announced, the project was viewed as a logical step to expand the company’s sci-fi offerings. The cancellation comes as the streaming landscape continues to shift, with platforms increasingly scrutinising the potential reach of niche intellectual properties.
It remains unclear whether Amazon will pursue other projects within the Stargate universe in the future. While this specific series has been halted, the broader franchise history, including Stargate SG-1 starring Richard Dean Anderson, suggests a enduring legacy. For now, the planned reboot is officially off the table, ending a development cycle that began with high enthusiasm from franchise fans.
