Amazon hurled its Lord of the Rings MMO back into the fires of Mount Doom
Games division restructuring sees closure of New World: Aeternum and withdrawal from major development projects

Amazon has officially cancelled the development of its Lord of the Rings massively multiplayer online game, marking another significant contraction in its gaming portfolio. The decision follows a period of substantial restructuring within Amazon Games, which saw the closure of New World: Aeternum and a strategic pivot away from high-cost, big-budget titles. While the specific project has been shelved, the company confirmed to Eurogamer that its creative team is still engaged in developing a new game experience set in Middle-earth.

The cancellation emerges from a broader operational review that began in October 2025, when Amazon Games underwent significant layoffs. During this period, the company shut down its four-year-old MMO, New World: Aeternum, and reduced its investment in major game development. A staff memo at the time indicated a withdrawal of support for big-budget titles, particularly MMOs, although specific projects were not publicly named in the initial announcement. The fate of the Lord of the Rings MMO had remained uncertain since these layoffs, with studio insiders later confirming to Eurogamer that the project was officially shelved.

Amazon’s gaming lead, Jeff Grattis, provided a statement indicating that the company remains committed to the intellectual property. He stated that the creative team continues to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien's world, working closely with the Middle-earth estate. This sentiment aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy to maintain its presence in the franchise, which includes producing the Rings of Power television series and holding video game rights secured through a 2023 deal with Embracer Group.

The cancellation was highlighted as part of a larger Eurogamer investigation into Amazon’s generative-AI mandates and subsequent staff reductions. A former senior gameplay engineer at Amazon Games Orange County, the studio responsible for New World and the cancelled MMO, posted a message on LinkedIn alluding to the game's demise during the October 2025 layoffs. The engineer, who subsequently deleted the post, described the Lord of the Rings game as fledgling and noted the loss of talented peers alongside the New World team.

This development is part of a wider trend of cost-cutting and simplification within Amazon’s gaming and streaming divisions. The company recently announced the shutdown of Glowmade’s dungeon crawler King of Meat, just six months after its launch. Additionally, Amazon is currently simplifying its Luna game-streaming service in an effort to make Prime subscriptions more attractive to consumers. The company’s focus appears to be shifting toward more sustainable models and integrated ecosystem benefits rather than standalone, high-risk game development.
