Alphabet reports record revenue and search usage as AI drives Q1 2026 growth
CEO Sundar Pichai attributes the surge in search queries to AI experiences, noting the company's strongest quarter for paid plans

Alphabet has reported its strongest quarter ever for consumer AI subscriptions, with paid plans exceeding 350 million, as the parent company posts a 22 per cent rise in consolidated revenues. Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai announced the figures during the earnings release for the first quarter of 2026, highlighting that the company's AI investments are impacting every segment of the business.
The core of the financial performance saw Alphabet's consolidated revenues climb to $109.9 billion, a significant increase from the $90.2 billion recorded in the same period last year. Within the broader group, Google Services revenues grew 16 per cent to reach $89.6 billion, reflecting a 19 per cent increase in subscriptions, platforms, and devices. This growth underscores the commercial viability of the firm's artificial intelligence strategy as it moves beyond experimental phases into widespread adoption.
A key driver of this activity was a record-breaking volume in Google Search queries during the quarter. Pichai stated that the all-time high in search usage was directly attributed to AI-powered experiences, which have fundamentally altered how users interact with the platform. The executive noted that search had a strong quarter, with AI experiences driving usage and generating 19 per cent revenue growth, suggesting a new paradigm for digital advertising and user engagement.
The expansion of the paid ecosystem was led by the Gemini App, which propelled the company to its strongest quarter for consumer AI plans. YouTube and Google One served as the primary engines for this subscription growth, reinforcing the diversification of Alphabet's revenue streams. This success comes alongside a robust performance from Google Cloud, where revenues surged 63 per cent year-on-year to $20 billion.
Recent product launches have been instrumental in delivering these results, with features such as Personal Intelligence for Gemini and task automation on the Samsung S26 and Pixel 10 series phones gaining traction. Additional innovations, including an auto-browse feature for Chrome and an AI Mode for Gmail, have further integrated intelligence into daily workflows. These tools have helped solidify the company's position as a leader in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
The earnings announcement follows a busy start to the year for the technology giant, which has seen a flurry of AI feature rollouts and ongoing legal challenges. Alphabet recently appealed a ruling that found the company to be an illegal online search monopolist following litigation with Epic Games. Despite these headwinds, the financial results indicate that the company's strategic focus on AI remains a powerful catalyst for growth.
Alphabet is scheduled to host an earnings call to discuss the Q1 2026 results at 4:30PM ET, where further details on the company's trajectory may be provided. The reported figures have already exceeded revenue expectations, according to CNBC, marking a pivotal moment for investors tracking the firm's ability to monetise its technological advancements.
