Alcaraz advances to US Open quarter-finals after straight-sets win
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in his fourth competitive singles match since a wrist injury kept him out for more than four months.
Carlos Alcaraz has reached the US Open quarter-finals after defeating American 20th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets.
The Spaniard won 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, extending his major-match winning streak to 18, according to Yahoo Sports. He has dropped one set on his way to the last eight in New York.
The result came in Alcaraz’s fourth competitive singles match since an absence of more than four months caused by a wrist injury. He missed both the French Open and Wimbledon during the lay-off.
Alcaraz said he felt close to “full power” and described the US Open as a special venue, adding that he was enjoying his time on court.
Paul, who was seeking a first US Open quarter-final appearance, challenged Alcaraz throughout. The Spaniard saved two break points while serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set before closing out the win.
Alcaraz will face either American eighth seed Ben Shelton or Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals.
