Data check: How Shreyas Iyer's consistency and Suryakumar Yadav's poor form paved way for India's T20I captaincy change
Selector chief cites consistent batting output and leadership experience as key drivers for leadership change

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, a decision grounded in a comparative analysis of recent batting performance and leadership capability. The appointment, announced ahead of the upcoming series against Ireland and England, signals a strategic pivot by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors, who identified a clear divergence in form between the outgoing captain, Suryakumar Yadav, and his successor.

Agarkar emphasised that Iyer had been a "standout candidate" for some time, noting that the batter had narrowly missed selection for the recent T20 World Cup squad solely because Yadav occupied the designated slot. The selector highlighted Iyer’s extensive experience in leading the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a critical factor, stating that the leadership role presented a "different challenge" but one for which Iyer was well-prepared. Iyer virtually attended the selection meeting from Wankhede, where he is currently participating in the T20 Mumbai League against a side captained by Yadav.

The rationale for the change is underpinned by detailed statistical data from the IPL seasons spanning 2024 to 2026. At the No. 4 batting position, Iyer has outperformed Yadav, scoring 885 runs at an average of 49.16 and a strike rate of 161.79, compared to Yadav’s 839 runs at an average of 49.35 and a strike rate of 162.28. This consistency has placed Iyer among the top run-scorers in the IPL over the last three seasons, with 1,453 runs at an average of 48.43, trailing only a select group of openers and top-order batters.

Conversely, Yadav’s recent form has shown a marked decline, particularly in the most recently concluded IPL 2026 season. While Iyer scored 439 runs at an average of 48.77 and a strike rate of 169.49, Yadav managed only 210 runs at an average of 26.25 and a strike rate of 145.83. The data indicates a significant drop in boundary production as well, with Iyer hitting 61 boundaries compared to Yadav’s 28 in the same period.

Internationally, the performance gap has also widened since Yadav assumed the captaincy in July 2024. Yadav’s international average has fallen from 43.60 prior to his elevation to 25.88 subsequently, with his strike rate dropping from 168.75 to 152.03. Over the last year, across 30 matches, Yadav has scored 674 runs at an average of 30.63 and a strike rate of 148.78, a tally that ranks him 17th among players with at least 25 T20I appearances in that timeframe. Agarkar noted that while Yadav had secured titles during his tenure, the focus must now shift towards building for 2028, necessitating a change in leadership to address the current lack of runs.

Iyer’s path to the captaincy was previously complicated by a near-fatal fall while taking a catch during an ODI series in Australia, which required hospitalisation and led to initial hesitancy from the BCCI medical team regarding his fitness clearance. Despite missing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and losing his central contract during this period, Iyer’s consistent output in the IPL has solidified his position. The selectors’ consensus reflects a desire to move forward based on current form rather than past achievements, with Iyer now set to lead the side in a format where he has demonstrated sustained reliability.
