Abernathy completes transfer from Tennessee to Oklahoma following 2026 season
Jay Abernathy, who played 106 games for the Volunteers over two seasons, has joined the University of Oklahoma after the conclusion of the 2026 campaign.

Former Tennessee Volunteers baseball player Jay Abernathy has transferred to the University of Oklahoma, following the conclusion of the 2026 season. The utility player, who appeared in 106 games for Tennessee between 2025 and 2026, utilised the NCAA transfer portal, which opened on June 1.
Abernathy’s tenure at Tennessee spanned two seasons under head coaches Tony Vitello and Josh Elander. During his time with the Vols, the 5-foot-10, 188-pound outfielder and infielder recorded a .255 batting average, accumulating 62 hits, four home runs, one triple, one double, 27 RBIs, 74 runs, 44 walks, and 17 stolen bases. He made 66 starts across his 106 appearances.
The University of Tennessee Volunteers concluded their 2026 baseball season on May 30 with a 38-22 record, including a 15-15 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The team was eliminated in the NCAA Tournament Chapel Hill Regional after losses to East Carolina and VCU in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Abernathy originally committed to Tennessee over Georgia Tech and South Alabama, coming from North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Georgia. At the high school level, he won back-to-back 2A state championships as a junior and senior.
The transfer marks a significant move for the player as he joins the Oklahoma Sooners. The move follows the standard procedural window for student-athletes looking to change institutions, with the portal opening earlier in the month to facilitate such transitions.
