ABB Commits $200 Million to Expand Europe Grid Equipment Capacity
Swiss giant targets Dalmine and five other nations to meet surging demand from data centres and industry

ABB has announced a $200 million investment programme across Europe designed to expand medium-voltage manufacturing capacity and accelerate the deployment of next-generation grid technologies. The initiative aims to address surging electricity demand driven by utilities, industries, and data centres as the region adapts to a changing energy landscape.

Approximately $100 million of the funding will establish a new facility in Dalmine, Italy, dedicated to producing air-insulated and SF6-free switchgear. The remaining funds will support capacity expansions at existing facilities in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Norway, and Poland to ensure supply availability and shorten lead times for customers.

The expansion specifically targets the production of critical power distribution technologies, including SF6-free switchgear, grid automation products, gas-insulated switchgear, vacuum interrupters, and protection relays. This strategic shift prioritises SF6-free technologies to comply with tightening European environmental regulations regarding greenhouse gas emissions, as sulfur hexafluoride is a potent gas commonly used in electrical switchgear insulation.

According to the International Energy Agency, electricity's share of global final energy consumption is expected to rise from roughly 20 per cent today to nearly 30 per cent by 2030. This projection intensifies the need for grid upgrades and new distribution infrastructure to support the integration of renewable power generation and the electrification of industrial systems.

ABB CEO Morten Wierod confirmed the investment is designed to improve supply availability and shorten lead times for customers adapting to a changing electricity landscape. The announcement underscores broader industrial trends reshaping the power sector, as equipment manufacturers race to scale production amid accelerating electrification and energy transition policies across Europe and other major markets.

The new investments build on recent spending initiatives elsewhere in the region. In Hungary, the company recently committed around $15 million to expand research and production capacity for connector technologies supporting medium-voltage network reliability. Additionally, ABB invested approximately $35 million in the UK to boost production of earthing and lightning protection technologies used to safeguard critical infrastructure, transportation systems, communications networks, and data centres.
