The A&W Restaurants corporation has announced the closure of several locations across the United States as the 107-year-old brand grapples with ongoing financial distress and broader economic challenges. The fast-food sector has faced significant headwinds over the last year, with mixed sales results prompting major chains to reassess their footprints and exit underperforming markets.

Specific closures include a site in Mankato, Minnesota, which shut its doors on 29 April 2026. The franchisee cited economic reasons for the decision, noting that the restaurant had operated since late 2018. In a public statement, the owner expressed sadness over the necessity of the closure, acknowledging the support received from the local community before the decision was made.

In Idaho, the situation proved more abrupt for a location in Pocatello. On 2 April 2026, the A&W corporation terminated the franchise contract due to the franchisee's financial struggles. The general manager, Reed Rollins, revealed that staff were informed just days before the closure, initially mistaking the news for an April Fool's joke. Despite a surge in community support that drove daily sales to $4,500 against a usual average of $1,300, the location closed a day early on 2 April 2026.

Negotiations are currently underway to repurpose the Pocatello site. The Ohio-based owner of the property is in talks with Popeyes to transition the location into a fried chicken franchise. Should an agreement be reached, estimates suggest a new Popeyes outlet could open within three to five months.

Another significant loss for the chain occurred in St Helena, California, where a long-standing location closed on 31 March 2026. This franchise, which had operated for nearly 60 years, attributed its closure to declining foot traffic, staffing difficulties, and high operating costs in the Napa Valley region. The owners also noted a reduction in school enrolment at the nearby St Helena High School as a contributing factor to reduced patronage.

A Great American Brand LLC, a franchisee-led company, has owned the A&W Restaurants Inc. brand since acquiring it from Yum Brands Inc. in September 2011. The chain currently operates approximately 850 restaurants across 35 US states and Asia, comprising over 600 single-brand units and roughly 230 co-branded locations with partners such as KFC and Long John Silver's.
