Sequel to block-building blockbuster adds star power and community engagement initiative

The sequel to the block-building blockbuster has officially been titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, with a scheduled release date of 23 July 2027. The announcement was made during the May Minecraft Live event by director Jared Hess and Mojang Chief Creative Officer Jens Bergensten, marking a significant step in the franchise’s expansion into mainstream cinema.

Kirsten Dunst has been cast as Alex, the female character option from the game, joining the cast for the upcoming instalment. Her inclusion signals a broadening of the narrative scope beyond the original film’s focus on the Steve character, portrayed by Jack Black.

Matt Berry returns to the franchise with an expanded role. Having voiced the 'Nitwit' in the first film, Berry will now play a new human character with increased screen time. While his specific identity remains unconfirmed, a clip from the live event shows him dismissing a costume choice by stating, “Steve would not be wearing that,” leading to speculation that he may be portraying Herobrine.

Herobrine is a well-known urban legend within the Minecraft community, often depicted as an evil counterpart to Steve. However, the exact nature of Berry’s role remains unclear, and any connection to the 'creepy pasta' character should be treated as speculative rather than confirmed fact.

In addition to the casting announcements, Hess and Bergensten launched the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge. This contest invites players to submit their most epic creations, with the winning build set to be featured in the film’s end credits. Full details for the competition are available via the provided link, offering fans a direct opportunity to influence the final product.

The release date of 23 July 2027 is subject to change, as is standard for film production schedules. The sequel will serve as the culmination of the community engagement efforts, with the winning build from the challenge appearing on the big screen.
