8BitDo unveils Arcade Controller Pro for competitive fighting game players
The latest iteration of 8BitDo’s all-button controller targets serious enthusiasts with hardware upgrades and tournament-focused locking mechanisms, though pricing and availability remain unconfirmed.
8BitDo has released the Arcade Controller Pro, a leverless arcade controller designed specifically for serious fighting game enthusiasts. Building on the success of its predecessor launched approximately a year ago, the new device refines the Hitbox-style design that replaces traditional joysticks with buttons to enhance precision. The Pro version features a slimmer 16mm profile and a rectangular pad with smaller, tightly spaced buttons, making the layout more accessible for players accustomed to rapid inputs.
Key hardware upgrades include a fifth programmable button added to the far left of the pad, providing additional control options while allowing more natural movement for the left hand. The controller utilises 8BitDo Core Green low-profile linear mechanical switches, co-developed with Kailh, which are hot-swappable to allow for custom tactile feedback. Redesigns to the round button caps facilitate easier installation from any angle, while five flat lock caps are included in the box to disable programmable buttons and prevent accidental inputs during competitive play.
Connectivity options have been expanded to support both wired and wireless configurations. Wired connections via USB-C are supported on Windows and Nintendo Switch, featuring a metal locking mechanism to secure the cable during intense sessions. Wireless play is available via a 2.4G connection for PC or Bluetooth for the Switch, offering approximately 15 hours of battery life with RGB features disabled. The controller also includes a magnetic wrist rest for added comfort during extended sessions.
User interface improvements are evident with the addition of a built-in display that shows real-time inputs and battery status. A control panel located above the action buttons allows users to switch between connection modes, adjust volume, and activate a tournament lock feature to prevent accidental inputs. These hardware adjustments aim to reduce reliance on companion software for basic adjustments, streamlining the experience for tournament environments.
For deeper customisation, the device is compatible with 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2, which enables users to modify button mapping and create macros. Despite the comprehensive feature set and recent launch, 8BitDo has not announced a release date or price for the Arcade Controller Pro. The company continues to target the niche market of fighting game players who prioritise precision and speed over traditional controller layouts.
