76ers reshape basketball operations leadership with Nelson promotion
Jameer Nelson elevated to executive vice president as Elton Brand departs general manager role

The Philadelphia 76ers have initiated a significant restructuring of their basketball operations leadership, promoting assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to the position of executive vice president. The appointment, confirmed by sources speaking to ESPN, positions Nelson as the second-in-command under newly appointed team president Mike Gansey.
Nelson, a former NBA All-Star and Philadelphia-area native, joins the organisation’s executive ranks following a 14-year playing career. He entered the 76ers’ front office in 2020 as a scout and G League executive, subsequently rising through the internal hierarchy to assume his current duties.
The leadership changes coincide with the departure of Elton Brand from the general manager role, a position he has held since 2018. Sources indicated that Brand elected not to interview for the newly created president position and is currently negotiating a different role with the franchise and its parent company, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. Despite his departure from the GM title, Brand has reportedly remained engaged in supporting the team’s preparations for the upcoming NBA draft.
Mike Gansey was brought in to replace Daryl Morey, who oversaw basketball operations for the previous six seasons. Morey’s tenure was characterised by five playoff berths and a 270-212 win-loss record. However, the franchise struggled to achieve deeper postseason success, failing to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs during that period and not reaching the conference finals since 2001.
In a move to stabilise the front office, assistant general manager Prosper Karangwa has also agreed to a multi-year contract extension. Karangwa had attracted interest from several rival teams in the preceding month prior to finalising his new deal with the 76ers.
