49ers rookies signal roster depth as veterans rest in preseason win
De'Zhaun Stribling and Kaelon Black delivered standout performances in San Francisco's 41-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, offering early solutions to an ageing roster ahead of the August cut-down deadline.

San Francisco 49ers rookies De'Zhaun Stribling and Kaelon Black provided a timely display of depth during a 41-17 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Inglewood on Thursday. The performance offers a potential pathway for a roster that has relied heavily on veteran stars, with both players demonstrating the capability to contribute immediately to the offensive structure.
Wide receiver Stribling, whom quarterback Mac Jones has dubbed "The Flyin' Hawaiian," recorded four catches for 46 yards. His impact was most evident on third down, where he converted two of his receptions and secured an 11-yard gain that set up a manageable short-yardage situation. Although Stribling created significant separation for a potential touchdown, helmet interference negated the score, suggesting his actual impact may exceed the official statistics.
Running back Kaelon Black, a third-round draft pick, gained 33 yards on eight carries. His performance included consecutive runs of eight and nine yards, which advanced the offence into Chargers territory. While Black’s output was limited by offensive-line play, his power and verticality offer a viable option as a backup to Christian McCaffrey.
The absence of veteran stars Mike Evans and Christian McCaffrey due to minor injuries highlighted the roster’s transitional phase. Evans, 32, is recovering from quad tightness following his first sub-1,000-yard receiving season in 12 years. McCaffrey, 30, rested with unspecified tightness after setting a single-season record for touches last year.
Rookie Carver Willis started at left guard, while Connor Colby started at right guard. The offensive line’s performance remains a key variable in maximising the potential of the rookie class. As the team approaches the 30 August roster cut-down deadline, these early signs suggest that the 2026 draft class may provide the necessary reinforcement for an ageing squad.
