49ers quarterback Purdy targets Super Bowl redemption after playoff heartbreak
Quarterback Brock Purdy emphasises that roster talent and current health do not guarantee success, citing the need to overcome past postseason disappointments.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has publicly affirmed the team’s capacity to win the Super Bowl, while cautioning that such success is not assured. Speaking at the 2026 Dwight Clark Legacy Series, Purdy highlighted the squad’s talent and current health but stressed the necessity of overcoming historical playoff setbacks.
Under head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers have made four trips to the NFC title game and two trips to the Super Bowl, but have not won a Lombardi Trophy. Last year's playoff run ended with a divisional round loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a result that Purdy described as leaving a "taste in our mouth" after falling short in the 2023 season.
Purdy emphasised that while the roster possesses the capability to win it all when at full strength, health is not guaranteed. He noted that the organisation’s players do not simply rely on the perceived beauty of the roster but are prepared to work for championships. The team overcame significant injuries, including one to Purdy, to return to the postseason last year, underscoring the fragility of maintaining a deep run.
The quarterback stated that the mindset in the locker room is focused on securing rings and celebrating key wins with the history of the 49ers. He acknowledged that a lot more goes into winning the championship than just having a talented squad, requiring the right circumstances to fall into place to survive the division, conference, and league.
With the 2026 Dwight Clark Legacy Series serving as the backdrop for these remarks, Purdy’s comments reflect a team determined to convert past near-misses into a final victory. The franchise remains focused on translating its regular-season and playoff presence into the ultimate prize, aware that past performance does not ensure future results.
