49ers and Aiyuk remain locked in stalemate as franchise moves on
San Francisco GM John Lynch says organisation will focus on current players, while Brandon Aiyuk seeks reinstatement to join Washington Commanders
The San Francisco 49ers have effectively severed ties with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, with General Manager John Lynch stating the organisation will focus on its current roster amid a protracted dispute that has kept the player sidelined for more than 600 days. Aiyuk, who last played in September 2024, remains on the reserve/left squad list following a severe knee injury and a subsequent breakdown in his contractual relationship with the franchise.
Lynch confirmed on Saturday that the team would not be accommodating Aiyuk’s return in the near future. "I'm personally, and we as an organisation, are going to focus on the players who are here," Lynch said. The 49ers have already moved on, signing free agents Mike Evans and Christian Kirk, and drafting De'Zhaun Stribling, signalling a clear shift away from the player who signed a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024.
The situation has deteriorated significantly since Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL in a Week 7 contest against the Chiefs in 2024. In November 2025, the 49ers voided $27 million in 2026 salary guarantees, citing the wide receiver’s failure to meet obligations under his contract. This financial restructuring led to his placement on the reserve list in December, a move Lynch later described in January 2026 as likely marking Aiyuk’s final snap with the team.
Aiyuk has responded to the stalemate with public criticism of the franchise, calling the 49ers "stupid" and "little-ass boys" in social media posts. He has also directed anger toward his former agent and the NFLPA, claiming inadequate support, while simultaneously expressing a desire to join the Washington Commanders. In July 2026, he posted a video dancing with the caption indicating he would soon be a Commander, despite remaining under contract with San Francisco.
Complicating matters further, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Aiyuk in early June 2026 for a misdemeanor speeding charge involving driving 104 mph in a 40 mph zone. Aiyuk has claimed GPS data proves he has reached recovery markers, but he has not yet applied for reinstatement from the reserve list, a mandatory step before he can be traded, released, or sign with another team.
