2026 World Cup Semifinals Set: Argentina, England, France, and Spain Advance

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the semifinal stage, with Argentina, England, France, and Spain remaining as the final four contenders. The tournament, hosted across Mexico, Canada, and the United States, has seen all three host nations eliminated from contention, leaving the remaining European and South American sides to battle for the title. The final is scheduled for 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Spain secured their place in the semifinals by defeating France 2-0 in the quarterfinals. The 2010 winners comfortably saw off the French side, ending the run of Kylian Mbappe and his teammates. Earlier in the quarterfinals, Spain also eliminated Belgium 2-1, following Belgium’s victory over the United States. Spain further progressed by eliminating Portugal in the round of 16.

England advanced to the semifinals after defeating Norway 2-1 in extra time, ending Norway’s fairy tale run which included a victory over Brazil. England’s Anthony Gordon set up Jude Bellingham’s opener against Norway and had previously won a penalty against Mexico, helping his team establish a 3-1 lead in that fixture. England and Argentina are set to meet in Atlanta, marking their first encounter in 21 years.

Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in extra time, keeping Lionel Messi’s chance of a back-to-back World Cup title alive. Emiliano Martinez contributed two goals and one assist for Argentina, including a goal in the quarterfinal against Switzerland. The South American side’s victory kept their campaign on track as they prepare to face France in the other semifinal.

This edition of the World Cup introduces the first-ever half-time show in FIFA history, curated by Chris Martin with performances by Madonna, Shakira, and BTS. The tournament features an expanded 48-team format, with the field narrowed from 48 to 32 at the end of the group stage before progressing through the round of 16 and quarterfinals to the current final four.
