152nd Kentucky Derby field shifts as injuries prompt late scratches and entries
Renegade remains the morning-line favourite at 4-1 despite challenges from post position No. 1 and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
The 152nd Kentucky Derby is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, with a start time of 6:57 p.m. ET. Arkansas Derby winner Renegade enters the field as the morning-line favourite at 4-1, though he faces structural challenges from being assigned post position No. 1 and riding for jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
Trainer Brad Cox fields two additional contenders, Commandment and Further Ado, both listed at 6-1 on the morning line. The field also features notable entries including Chief Wallabee at 8-1, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, alongside international hopefuls Wonder Dean and Six Speed. Trainer Mark Glatt enters So Happy at 15-1 following the recent death of his wife, Dena.
Late changes to the field composition have occurred as of the report time of 3:05 p.m. ET Thursday. Silent Tactic has been scratched from the race due to a foot injury, with trainer Mark Casse expressing hope that the colt can compete in the Preakness Stakes on May 16.
Fulleffort has also been withdrawn from the event. A chip in his left hind ankle was discovered via X-ray after the horse appeared off upon returning from the track. The injury is considered relatively minor but will keep the horse away from races for several weeks.
Capitalising on the withdrawals, Great White has entered the race following the scratch of Silent Tactic. The $2.4 million purchase was originally not in the field but has now secured a spot in the starting gate. Ocelli, who is winless in six career starts, has also entered the field late after Fulleffort's withdrawal.
As the field settles for Saturday, the structural dynamics of the race remain a primary focus for observers. No horse has emerged as a dominant favourite to beat, and any horse from a group of five could end up as the favourite when the starting gate opens.
