Augmented reality wearables provider Xreal has formally entered the lower-cost market segment with the launch of a new sub-brand, X by Xreal (XBX). The debut product for the division is the a01 AR display glasses, which are priced at $299. While the device is currently available in China, the company has confirmed a planned launch for the United States in July.

The a01 is positioned as a lightweight, camera-free device weighing just 62 grams. It features a 1,600-nit HDR10 display and what Xreal describes as an "industry-first spatial anti-shake algorithm." This technology is designed to preserve image clarity during turbulent motion, such as on subways, trains, or airplanes, by reducing visual blur and washout caused by movement.

Unlike more premium AR headsets, the a01 does not include degrees-of-freedom (DoF) support for tracking the wearer’s head rotations or body movements. Additionally, the device lacks a built-in battery, requiring users to maintain a wired connection to a smartphone or laptop to function. This tethered approach distinguishes it from standalone mixed-reality units that offer greater autonomy.

The glasses also feature interchangeable front frames available in three designs: Sport, Stealth, and Classic. These allow users to customise the aesthetic of the device to match specific outfits or preferences. It remains unclear whether these frames can be purchased separately from the main unit or what the individual costs for each design will be.

While swappable frames have been seen on other glasses, such as the Solos AirGo Vision, Xreal’s options are described as more expansive. The a01 represents a strategic move by Xreal to capture the budget-conscious consumer base, offering core visual enhancements without the complexity or cost of full tracking systems.
