Verge analysis finds Valve Steam Machine undercuts DIY build cost by $200
A cost breakdown by The Verge reveals the pre-assembled console offers superior value for compact form factors, despite the availability of the operating system for self-built rigs.

The Verge has published a detailed cost analysis comparing the manufacturing value of Valve’s Steam Machine against a comparable mini-ITX PC assembled from off-the-shelf components. The outlet determined that a self-built equivalent would cost approximately $1,268.81, significantly exceeding the Steam Machine’s base price of $1,049. The analysis concluded that the Steam Machine offers a competitive balance of price, performance, and compact size, particularly given the current elevated market prices for RAM and SSDs.
The Steam Machine features a custom six-core AMD mobile processor with Zen 4 architecture and a custom AMD GPU utilising RDNA 3 architecture with 8GB of VRAM. It is equipped with 16GB of DDR5 RAM and sits on a custom motherboard with a dedicated cooler that occupies nearly the entire internal volume of the device’s six-inch cube. Valve has indicated that the device is sold essentially at cost, with the top-tier model priced at $1,349 for 2TB of storage.
To replicate the performance, The Verge assembled a build using a Fractal Design Terra mini-ITX case, which measures 13x6x8.6 inches with a volume of approximately 10 litres. This configuration was necessary to accommodate a full-sized desktop GPU, resulting in a footprint more than two and a half times larger than the Steam Machine. The total cost for this custom build rose to $1,446.81 if configured with 2TB of storage.
The analysis highlighted the competitive landscape for compact prebuilt systems. The Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro, priced at $1,400, offers greater power with an RTX 5060 GPU and Ryzen 9 8945HX processor but is noted for being taller and noisier. The Framework Desktop starts at $1,269 and features a Ryzen AI Max 385 CPU, yet remains slightly larger than the Steam Machine while offering less powerful graphics performance.
Valve has released a SteamOS 3.8 update that allows the operating system to run on any PC with an AMD GPU, potentially encouraging consumers to build their own units. However, the company has also acknowledged that component shortages impacted launch quantities, a factor that may drive more users toward home assembly despite the higher costs and larger size of DIY alternatives.
