Taco Bell eyed in explosive diarrheal outbreak; leafy greens suspected
Michigan reports 3,309 infections amid nationwide investigation into contaminated produce and fast-food chains

Health authorities in the United States are investigating a significant nationwide surge of Cyclospora, a diarrheal parasite, with the national case count exceeding 4,000 across at least 31 states as of 14 July 2026. Michigan has reported 3,309 cases, including 44 hospitalisations, representing a substantial deviation from the typical annual average of approximately 50 cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently collecting data on the infections, though reporting has been slow.

Interviews with more than 1,000 sickened individuals in Michigan point to leafy greens, particularly lettuce, as the common source of the outbreak. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive, stated that while a definite product has not yet been identified, early information consistently highlights lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services noted that identifying the source is complicated by the parasite’s incubation period, which can take up to two weeks, and by complex food distribution networks.

Separately, state and federal officials are examining whether Taco Bell restaurants may have contributed to the contamination. Local media in the Detroit area observed signs at Taco Bell locations indicating an inability to sell lettuce, cilantro, onion, pico de gallo, and guacamole due to a "nationwide recall." However, no such official recall has been announced by Michigan or federal authorities. Taco Bell did not respond to multiple requests for comment regarding the signs or the removal of produce.

A source familiar with the investigation indicated that while some ill individuals reported eating at Taco Bell, others did not, suggesting the possibility of multiple contamination sources. The Washington Post reported that officials are actively looking into the chain's role, but the evidence remains inconclusive. The outbreak has also seen significant case numbers in New York, with 470 cases, Ohio with at least 397, and North Carolina with at least 240.

In the absence of a confirmed source, health officials are advising caution regarding leafy greens, particularly bagged or boxed varieties. Recommendations include purchasing whole heads of lettuce, discarding the outer layers, and washing thoroughly. Cooking produce to at least 158° F (70° C) is considered the safest method to eliminate the parasite. Past outbreaks have been linked to bagged salad mixes, fresh herbs, raspberries, and snow peas.
