US Authorities Seize Ballots in Four States as Election Integrity Concerns Mount
Experts describe the seizures as a potential dry run for future election interference, with courts halting some recounts while the Department of Justice faces accusations of misleading judges to bypass civil litigation.

Federal and local authorities in the United States have seized or demanded election ballots across four states, citing alleged fraud from previous elections. The actions, which include an FBI raid on a Fulton County facility and a California sheriff conducting an unauthorized recount, have drawn warnings from experts who view them as politically motivated attempts to undermine election outcomes or establish precedents for future interference. Legal challenges have been mounted against several seizures, with courts ordering halts to some recounts while concerns grow over the potential for chaos in the upcoming midterms.
The Trump administration has seized ballots cast years ago in several states, claiming to search for fraud or malfeasance. In January, FBI agents raided an election facility in Fulton County, Georgia, seizing 600 boxes of 2020 ballots. In March, the Department of Justice obtained ballot images from 2020 in Maricopa County, Arizona, and demanded ballots from the 2024 election in Wayne County, Michigan. In March, a Republican sheriff in California obtained a warrant to seize approximately 650,000 ballots from a statewide redistricting election held in November, announcing an unauthorized recount.
The Fulton County seizure was initiated by Kurt Olsen, a White House adviser, and involved Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, despite her lack of authority over domestic law enforcement. County officials in Fulton County accused the Department of Justice of misleading the magistrate judge who approved the warrant, alleging a gross mischaracterization of the facts. The Department of Justice used a criminal case in Georgia to bypass civil litigation and seize original ballots, which experts note is irregular compared to standard practices of inspecting or copying ballots.
In Arizona, the FBI seized hard drives and servers containing digital ballot images from the Arizona State Senate, as physical ballots had been destroyed in compliance with state law. In Michigan, the Department of Justice demanded 865,000 ballots from the 2024 election in Wayne County, citing debunked 2020 fraud allegations. California’s attorney general ordered Sheriff Chad Bianco to halt his recount, and the state supreme court ordered a stay on the recount pending further review.
Experts fear these actions could serve as a dry run for interfering with ongoing elections, potentially leading to chaos if courts fail to scrutinise politically motivated requests. Gowri Ramachandran of the Brennan Center for Justice and Anna Baldwin of the Campaign Legal Center have urged judges to avoid allowing these actions to set a precedent. The seizures have focused on critical battleground states, raising questions about the motives behind the federal government’s aggressive tactics and the potential for further disruption in the November midterms.
