UNC Athletics Analysts Project 2027 Draft Landscape Amidst Shifting Talent Pipeline
University of North Carolina analysts have released a comprehensive assessment of potential 2027 professional selections, noting a rebound in draft numbers while identifying key players in football, basketball, and baseball.

University of North Carolina athletics analysts have published a detailed preview of potential professional draft selections for the 2027 season, covering men’s football, basketball, and baseball. The report marks a strategic pivot from recent outcomes to future projections, noting that the university produced eight players in the 2026 professional drafts. This figure represents an increase from the six selections made in 2025, though it remains a decrease from the ten players drafted in 2024. The 2026 cohort comprised two NBA picks and six MLB draft selections, with no UNC players selected in the NFL Draft, a first since 2016.
In football, the analysis identifies wide receiver Jordan Shipp as a primary prospect, projecting him as an early-to-mid Day 3 NFL selection. Shipp’s performance in 2025, which included 671 receiving yards and six touchdowns, has positioned him as a key asset for the incoming offensive coordinator. On the defensive side, edge rusher Melkart Abou-Jaoude is viewed as a Rounds 6-7 prospect. Despite leading the ACC in sacks with 10.5 in his first season, analysts note concerns regarding his pass-rush bend and consistency against competent offensive lines. Other football prospects mentioned include offensive lineman Aidan Banfield, running back Kaleb Jackson, and tight end Jelani Thurman, with ceilings estimated around Round 5.
The basketball section identifies Sayon Keita, Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas, and Terrence Brown as players on NBA radars. Keita, a 6’11” centre, is highlighted for his athleticism and shot-blocking ability, with projections suggesting a potential first-round selection if his offensive polish improves. Matt Able is described as a high-floor guard projected for the late lottery to early second round, valued for his shooting efficiency and mature game. Avdalas and Brown’s draft stocks are viewed as dependent on improved shooting consistency and efficiency, respectively, with Avdalas’ prospects hinging on his ability to maintain engagement and Brown’s on refining his scoring metrics.
In baseball, the preview identifies returning seniors and incoming transfers as potential targets for the 2027 MLB Draft. Pitcher Walker McDuffie is ranked as the 74th college prospect by Baseball America, projecting a 3rd-4th round selection. Infielders Gavin Gallaher and Erik Paulsen are returning for their senior seasons after going undrafted in 2026, with analysts noting their need to put together consistent full seasons to improve their professional outlook. Incoming transfers shortstop Jamie Laskofski and outfielder CJ Egrie are also discussed, with Laskofski viewed as a potential Day 1 pick and Egrie as an 8th-11th round prospect.
The report underscores the athletic department’s focus on maintaining positive momentum following the 2026 draft results. While the 2024 season featured a top-heavy draft with three first-round picks, the 2026 outcome reflects a broader distribution of talent across multiple sports. Analysts suggest that the success of the 2027 draft class will depend on the development of these key prospects, particularly in football where the roster is described as young and relatively unknown, and in basketball where new coaching strategies are being implemented to maximise player potential.
