Japanese publisher unveils final instalment of remake saga at Summer Game Fest, detailing open-world mechanics and new playable roster

Square Enix has officially confirmed the title and release window for the third and final instalment of its Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Announced during Summer Game Fest Live 2026, the game is titled Final Fantasy VII Revelation and is scheduled for a global launch in spring 2027. The publisher confirmed that the title will be released simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement follows a multi-year project that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020, which reimagined the Midgar section of the original 1997 title, and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. Rebirth expanded the scope into an open-world format and introduced the Queen’s Blood card game. Revelation is set to conclude this saga, with Square Enix describing the narrative as a moment where the world teeters on the brink of annihilation.

Footage presented at the event highlighted a shift in gameplay mechanics, including the ability to pilot the Highwind airship and jump from it to access the game’s open world. Players will encounter the "Weapons," described as gigantic planetary guardians, and visit locations from the original game such as Wutai. The narrative focuses on the final confrontation with Sephiroth, featuring a meteor event and global chaos that players must navigate to determine the planet’s fate.

A notable addition to the roster includes Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind as playable characters, roles they did not hold in the previous instalment, Rebirth. The presentation also introduced a new "fit" system, allowing players to customise character statistics and appearances through special armours. Vincent’s English voice actor, Matt Mercer, referenced this mechanic during the event, jokingly referring to it as the "fit" system.

Square Enix confirmed that Chadley, a cyborg character from previous instalments, will return in Revelation. The publisher’s official description states that the scale of the conflict has never been larger, requiring players to master strategic combat alongside a fully assembled party. While a second trailer was shown in Japanese, an English-language version had not been verified at the time of reporting.
