Sony’s new Xperia phone gets an overdue redesign
Flagship smartphone receives first significant aesthetic overhaul since 2020, featuring a square camera module and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor

Sony has officially released the Xperia 1 VIII, introducing the first substantial design revision for its flagship smartphone series since 2020. The device abandons the traditional vertical camera strip in favour of a prominent square camera island, a move that accommodates a significantly larger telephoto sensor and integrates an AI camera assistant. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, the phone represents a calculated effort to refresh Sony’s aesthetic while addressing long-standing hardware limitations.

The redesign features a chunky square block housing three lenses, a flash, and the Sony logo, which slopes towards the device’s edge. The build utilises frosted glass, aluminium edges, and a knurled shutter button, available in black, silver, red, and an online-exclusive gold finish. This departure from the vertical layout seen on previous models allows Sony to fit a 1/1.56-inch-type 48MP telephoto sensor, which is nearly four times larger than that of the Xperia 1 VII. However, the inclusion of this larger sensor necessitated the removal of the continuous optical zoom feature present in the last four flagship iterations.

Beyond hardware, the Xperia 1 VIII introduces an AI camera assistant that suggests filters, framing, and lens choices before capture. The feature, which is enabled by default but can be disabled, aims to streamline the photography process with suggestions for subject brightening and background adjustments. The main and ultrawide cameras remain 48MP and largely unchanged, while the overall system benefits from a new RAW multi-frame processing pipeline and updated macro shooting capabilities that now support autofocus.

Internally, the device is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery supporting 30W charging, alongside legacy features such as a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD slot. It carries an IP65/68 rating and includes stereo speakers tuned in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Sony Music. The phone will receive four years of operating system updates and six years of security patches, a duration that trails behind many competing flagship devices.

Pricing for the Xperia 1 VIII starts at £1,399 or €1,499 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model. The top-tier 16GB RAM and 1TB configuration is priced at £1,849 or €1,999 and is exclusively available in gold through Sony’s online store. While the device is now available for order in Europe and Asia, Sony has confirmed there are no plans for a North American launch.
