Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network shifts focus to Meta whistleblower Frances Haugen

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for The Social Reckoning, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2010 film The Social Network. Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, the follow-up brings the story of Facebook and Meta into the 2020s, marking a significant temporal shift from the original movie which chronicled the social network’s early days. The new narrative centres on the fallout from internal secrets being exposed, with former engineer and whistleblower Frances Haugen as a key figure.

Jeremy Strong portrays Mark Zuckerberg in a defiant stance, taking over the role previously held by Jesse Eisenberg. In the trailer, Zuckerberg is depicted as a "professional defendant" during a mock hearing scene. He is also shown confronting a character played by Bill Burr, who describes him as a "free speech absolutist" and questions the "firehose of bad information" injected into the public sphere.

Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter who broke the news of her revelations. The trailer depicts Haugen and Horwitz attempting to disseminate Meta’s secrets while acknowledging the potential danger to their safety. This follows the real-world events of 2021, when Haugen leaked documents alleging that the company prioritised profit over safety and contributed to the spread of election misinformation.

Sorkin serves as both writer and director for this sequel, whereas David Fincher directed the original film. The story is set 17 years after the events of the original movie, moving the timeline into the 2020s. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on October 9.
