Flagship headphones return after four-year hiatus with user-replaceable battery and Dolby Atmos support

Sennheiser has released the Momentum 5 Wireless headphones, marking the first significant update to its flagship audio line in nearly four years since the Momentum 4. Priced at $400, the new device features a user-replaceable 700mAh battery, enhanced active noise cancellation (ANC) via additional microphones, and Hi-Res Audio certification. Key technical upgrades include Snapdragon Sound support for aptX Lossless, Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity with future Bluetooth 6.0 compatibility, and a day-one firmware update adding Dolby Atmos with head tracking. The headphones are available in black, white, and blue.

The Momentum 5 retains the 42mm transducers found in earlier iterations, which were originally inspired by Sennheiser’s iconic HD 600 series and tuned for full-bodied sound and dynamic bass. However, the fifth-generation model now carries Hi-Res Audio certification and supports Snapdragon Sound, enabling aptX Lossless codec compatibility. This lossless capability is contingent on the source device, being restricted to smartphones equipped with Qualcomm processors that support the Snapdragon Sound platform. The headphones are also compatible with the BTD 700 lossless Bluetooth dongle, which previously debuted with the HDB 630 headphones.

To further bolster audio quality, Sennheiser has added two additional microphones per side, bringing the total to four per ear cup. The company claims this configuration results in up to three times more effective noise cancellation of human voices and improved call voice quality. The Smart Control Plus app now includes an 8-band EQ, audio presets, and sound personalisation features. Digital signal processing (DSP) Bluetooth updates are also planned to enhance performance further.

Connectivity features include Bluetooth 5.4, with the device designed for future Bluetooth 6.0 compatibility via a firmware update. A day-one firmware update will add Dolby Atmos with head tracking, whereas current out-of-the-box support is for Dolby Atmos without the immersive head tracking feature. This software enhancement aims to provide a more spatial audio experience for compatible content.

Battery life is rated at 57 hours with ANC enabled, a slight decrease from the 60 hours offered by the previous model. The Momentum 5 features a quick-charge function providing three hours of use from a five-minute charge. The 700mAh battery is user-replaceable, requiring only a Phillips-head screwdriver for the swap. The Momentum 5 Wireless headphones will be available on June 16 for $400 in black, white, and blue.
