Roku’s $3 streaming service, Howdy, reaches 1M subs, per recent report
The affordable, ad-free platform has outperformed industry retention averages just months after its August 2025 launch.

Roku's dedicated paid streaming venture, Howdy, has officially surpassed one million subscribers. According to data compiled by research firm Antenna, the service achieved this milestone shortly after its launch in August 2025. The rapid uptake suggests a growing appetite for low-commitment viewing options as consumers navigate an increasingly expensive media landscape.

Priced at $2.99 per month, Howdy positions itself as an accessible entry point rather than a direct competitor to major platforms like Netflix or Disney+. The service recently expanded its reach by introducing a standalone mobile app and integrating with Amazon Prime Video, broadening its accessibility to viewers who may not own a dedicated Roku device. This strategic expansion has likely contributed to the platform's ability to hit the million-subscriber mark with such speed.

The content library consists of approximately 10,000 hours of material, focusing on older television shows and films secured through licensing deals with studios including Lionsgate and Warner Bros. Discovery. Titles such as "The Blind Side" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" are available to subscribers, providing a curated selection that avoids the cost of acquiring current blockbuster releases while still offering significant value.

Financial performance metrics released by Antenna highlight the service's resilience. Howdy reported approximately 300,000 subscribers in its first month of operation and has since maintained a steady growth trajectory, adding at least 100,000 new users each month. This consistent influx of users underscores the effectiveness of the service's value proposition in the current market environment.

Retention figures further distinguish Howdy from its peers. Among users who signed up in August and September 2025, the platform recorded a six-month retention rate of 51%. This figure outperforms the industry average for both premium SVOD services, which sit at 47%, and specialty SVOD platforms, which average 38%. The data suggests that the low price point and ad-free nature of the service are key drivers for long-term user engagement.

Despite these positive indicators, Howdy remains a small fraction of the market compared to the giants of the streaming industry and free, ad-supported alternatives like Tubi. Roku has clarified that the service is designed to complement existing subscriptions rather than replace them, targeting viewers seeking a simple, budget-friendly addition to their entertainment lineup. As the sector continues to grapple with rising costs, the success of Howdy may signal a shift toward more affordable, niche streaming options.
