Qualcomm Unveils New Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5 Processors for Midrange Market
Qualcomm has announced two new mobile processors designed to bridge the gap between performance and affordability, with devices expected to hit the market later this year or in early 2027.

Qualcomm has officially revealed two new mobile processors, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, specifically targeting the midrange and affordable smartphone sectors. The announcement marks a strategic move to provide manufacturers with options that balance processing power with cost-effective design, positioning the new chips beneath the company's flagship Snapdragon 8 series lines.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is positioned as the more powerful option of the pair, featuring an eight-core Kryo CPU comprising four performance and four efficiency cores. Its Adreno GPU is claimed to be 21 per cent more powerful than the previous generation Gen 4 SoC. Beyond raw processing speed, the chip supports advanced connectivity standards including sub-6GHz 5G, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0 with Channel Sounding technology designed to help users locate accessories.
A key feature across both processors is Qualcomm's Smooth Motion UI technology, which aims to improve the user experience by reducing lag. On the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, this technology promises 20 per cent faster app launches and 18 per cent less screen stutter. The entry-level Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 sees even more significant gains with Smooth Motion UI, delivering 43 per cent faster app launches and 25 per cent less screen stutter compared to its predecessor.
The entry-level Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is designed to provide a good mix of processing power and energy efficiency for budget handsets. It features a GPU that is 77 per cent faster than the previous generation, capable of supporting 90fps gaming for the first time. Additionally, it includes Dual SIM Dual Active technology, a feature particularly relevant for markets outside the US where dual SIM slots are more prevalent, alongside support for Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1.
Both chips incorporate AI capabilities, with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 offering specific tools such as Intelligent Night Vision and digital zoom up to 100x magnification. While the 4 Gen 5 focuses on graphics performance, both processors include AI camera features intended to enhance low-light photography and video processing.
Devices utilising these new processors are expected to launch later this year or in early 2027. Qualcomm has confirmed that major manufacturers including Honor, Redmi, Oppo, and Realme are planning to release phones featuring the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, though specific model names have yet to be announced.
