Plex is tripling the price of a lifetime pass to $750 after doubling it last year
Streaming service shifts focus to recurring revenue model

Streaming service Plex has announced it will increase the price of its lifetime Plex Pass subscription to $749.99 on 1 July 2026. This adjustment effectively triples the current rate of $249.99, which was itself doubled from $119.99 in March of the previous year. The company states that the significant price hike is designed to discourage lifetime purchases, steering users instead toward recurring annual subscriptions that it argues better sustain long-term development.

Plex is currently offering a window for prospective customers to purchase the lifetime pass at the existing rate of $249.99 until 12:01 AM UTC on 1 July 2026. The company’s blog and website are utilising prominent calls to action and banners to encourage these purchases before the deadline. At the new $749.99 price point, a customer would need to subscribe for 11 years at the current annual rate for the lifetime pass to be financially worthwhile compared to annual renewals.

Existing lifetime pass holders will not be affected by the change. Plex has confirmed that monthly and annual subscription prices are not changing today, and the previous price adjustments made last year remain the baseline for new customers. The company notes that the annual subscription now covers a decade’s worth of service at current rates, positioning the recurring model as a stable revenue source regardless of whether users opt for the lifetime deal.

The strategic shift comes as Plex gates remote streaming capabilities, which allow users to stream media server video outside the home, behind the subscription. Free users retain the ability to create collections and stream to devices on their local network, while premium features such as skipping intros and credits, remote downloads, auto-rewind on pause, and hardware-accelerated streaming require a Plex Pass.

Plex remains a small company with private finances, having experienced significant layoffs a few years ago. The global advertising market is currently in a downturn, and the exact financial impact of this price hike on Plex’s revenue is unknown. While the move may drive an immediate infusion of cash through pre-increase sales, the long-term sustainability of this strategy in relation to broader market conditions remains uncertain.
