OpenAI expands parental alerts to include violence-related bans on ChatGPT
The AI firm will notify linked guardians if a teen account is deactivated for violent threats, alongside new study tools and usage breaks.

OpenAI has announced it will notify parents and guardians linked to teenage accounts if their children are removed from ChatGPT for violating policies regarding violent threats or acts of violence. The update expands the company’s existing parental control suite, which previously only alerted guardians if the chatbot detected signs that a child might be thinking of harming themselves.
The new notification system was developed in collaboration with Moonshot, a firm specialising in monitoring and countering online violence. Under the updated protocol, parents will receive an alert regarding an important update to their child’s account. They can then select a “Learn More” option to view a detailed message explaining that the account has been deactivated due to violations of usage policies related to Acts of Violence.
Moonshot founder Vidhya Ramalingam stated that notifying parents when serious concerns arise is a critical first step in allowing families to intervene early. She noted that providing access to this context is one of several measures required to keep young people safer while using the platform.
The expansion of safety protocols follows significant public scrutiny and an apology from OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman after it emerged that the company did not notify authorities when the 2025 Tumbler Ridge mass shooting suspect in British Columbia was banned from ChatGPT. Canadian authorities summoned the company following reports that the suspect had used the platform prior to the incident.
In addition to the new violence-related alerts, OpenAI has introduced a “Study Mode” accessible directly through parental controls. This feature enables the chatbot to provide hints before answering questions to assist students with their learning. The company has also increased break reminders for teen users who spend extended periods on the platform to encourage healthier technology habits.
