OpenAI launches ChatGPT for personal finance, will let you connect bank accounts
New feature allows Pro users to link bank accounts via Plaid for portfolio and spending analysis

OpenAI has launched a new personal finance feature for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, enabling users to connect bank accounts via the financial connection service Plaid. The tool, available on the web and iOS, allows users to view portfolio performance, spending habits, subscription costs, and upcoming payments. This release follows OpenAI’s acquisition of the Hiro team in April, with the company noting the team’s expertise was useful in developing the product, though it did not confirm if the entire feature was built by them.

Users can access the tool by selecting the “Finances” option in the sidebar or typing “@Finances, connect my accounts” in a conversation. The integration supports over 12,000 financial institutions, including major names such as Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Once connected, the chatbot guides users through linking their accounts to provide detailed answers to questions ranging from recent spending changes to long-term financial planning.

The company stated that more than 200 million users already ask financial questions to ChatGPT every month. To address the complexity of these queries, OpenAI cited its new GPT-5.5 model, which it claims is stronger at reasoning with context. The company also worked with finance experts to create a benchmark for the model to improve its performance on personal finance questions.

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to support Intuit soon, which will enable analysis on the tax impacts of stock sales and the odds of credit card approval. Data privacy measures include the ability for users to remove account connections via Settings > Apps > Finances, with synced data removed from ChatGPT within 30 days. Users can also view and delete financial memories from the Finances page.

The launch positions OpenAI alongside competitors like Perplexity, which launched its own financial research product earlier this month, and Anthropic, which has introduced health-related tools. OpenAI noted that it intends to improve the product based on feedback from Pro users before rolling it out to Plus subscribers.
