Multispectral imager calibration test yields high-resolution imagery of red planet and its moons

NASA has released a timelapse video compiled from thousands of images captured by the Psyche spacecraft during its gravity-assist flyby of Mars in May. The footage, published on Friday, depicts the crescent planet, surface details, and the south polar ice cap as the spacecraft departed the red planet. The encounter, which occurred between May 2 and May 15, provided the necessary trajectory adjustment and speed boost to propel the mission toward its target asteroid, Psyche, with an expected arrival in 2029.

The images were taken by the spacecraft’s multispectral imager, which captured the planet's features during the close approach. Jim Bell, the Psyche imager instrument lead at Arizona State University, stated that the instrument performed "brilliantly" and delivered views of the red planet that are rarely seen. The data collected during this window serves as a critical component of the mission's progress toward the asteroid belt.

Beyond the visual record, the Mars flyby functioned as a rigorous calibration test for the multispectral imager. According to Bell, the encounter allowed mission controllers to fully test the instrument's calibration and sensitivity to scattered light. This technical verification is essential for ensuring the imager can operate effectively in the deep-space environment as it continues its long-duration journey.

The spacecraft also successfully detected the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos from a significant distance during the flyby. Bell noted that this capability was part of a practice run for the satellite search operations that will be conducted at the target asteroid. The mission aims to search for moonlets around the metal-rich asteroid Psyche, making the ability to detect small bodies from afar a key operational requirement.

The gravity assist maneuver was designed to adjust the spacecraft's trajectory and speed while conserving propellant for the remainder of the mission. By leveraging Mars' gravitational pull, Psyche was able to maintain its course toward the asteroid belt without expending additional fuel. The successful completion of this phase marks a significant milestone in the mission's timeline, setting the stage for the final approach in 2029.
