Lynx clinch first playoff berth as McBride shatters WNBA scoring record

The Minnesota Lynx have become the first team in the current WNBA season to clinch a playoff spot, securing their berth with a decisive 103-90 victory over the Dallas Wings on Sunday. The win improved the Lynx’s record to 27-7, solidifying their position ahead of the postseason tournament.

Guard Kayla McBride delivered a performance that redefined offensive efficiency, scoring a career-high 43 points in the process. Shooting 10 of 14 from behind the arc, McBride established a new WNBA single-game record for three-pointers made. The record-breaking shot occurred with 2:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, earning a standing ovation from fans at Target Center.

McBride, 34, admitted she was unaware of her proximity to the record until a member of the coaching staff informed her she needed one more three-pointer. She described her mindset as purely focused on winning, noting that she had felt angry about missing shots in the third quarter but remained committed to the outcome. "Just trying to win, really, that's all it is," McBride said postgame. "There is no better feeling."

The victory was significantly facilitated by rookie Olivia Miles, who contributed 20 points and a season-high 13 assists. ESPN Insights data indicates McBride scored 22 points, shooting 8 of 9 from the field, off passes from Miles. McBride praised Miles’ ability to create opportunities, stating, "It's like a kid in a candy store. I'm very grateful for that."

Minnesota’s success has been notable despite star player Napheesa Collier missing the first 27 games of the season due to recovery from surgery on both ankles. The Lynx have won 12 of their last 13 games and are on track to break their franchise record for most wins in a single season, which was 34 set last year. McBride, who returned to Minnesota in the offseason, called it the "best decision" she has ever made.
