Lego and Sega Partner to Release 479-Piece Genesis Console Set
The new $40 model offers dual branding options and follows a trend of retro gaming hardware kits from the Danish toy giant.
Lego and Sega have announced a new 479-piece construction set that replicates the iconic Sega Genesis console. The model, which includes two detachable controllers, is priced at $40 and will be available from Lego stores starting June 1.
The set allows builders to choose between the 'Genesis' branding familiar to North American markets or the 'Mega Drive' name used in Japan and other regions. Once assembled, the console measures approximately 1.5 inches high, six inches wide, and 4.5 inches deep. The kit also features a mock game cartridge depicting Sonic and Tails, alongside blocks designed to construct a hidden portrait of the blue hedgehog.
This release continues a series of Lego game console sets introduced over the past few years, which includes models of the NES and Game Boy. The announcement follows the rapid sell-out of a standalone Lego Sega Genesis Controller build kit released earlier, suggesting strong consumer demand for retro gaming hardware in the form of physical builds.
It is important to note that the new console model is a decorative build and is not designed to be functional. While a previous Lego Game Boy set was modified by a third party to become playable, the official Lego product remains a static display piece. The company has not confirmed specific stock levels or pre-order availability prior to the June 1 launch date.
The set will be distributed through Lego's online channels and physical retail locations globally. As with previous releases, the exact physical store locations are not specified beyond the general designation of Lego stores.
